Early Childhood of Caruana
Caruana was born in Miami, Florida, on July 30, 1992. When he relocated to New York at the age of five, after-school chess program helped him to uncover his innate aptitude for the game. The well-known chess author National Master Bruce Pandolfini served as his first chess instructor. GMs Miron Sher and Alexander Chernin later served as Caruana’s coaches.
In 2002, he achieved FIDE mastery, and in 2006, he attained international mastery. At fourteen years, eleven months, and twenty days, Caruana finished the year as the youngest grandmaster in both Italy and the United States. He became the youngest Italian champion ever, having won the Italian Chess Championship shortly after being named a grandmaster.
Teenage Years of GM Fabiano Caruana
The Italian grandmaster qualified for the 2009 Group B event after winning the Tata Steel Group C segment to start 2008. Later same year, Caruana competed in the Dresden Olympiad as an Italian representative and made his Olympiad debut. Caruana went on to win the Italian Championship once more, making it a back-to-back victory with a 7.5/11 result. With a rating of 2640, he entered the world’s top-100 players in October to close off the year.
After defeating English grandmaster Nigel Short in the championship round in 2009, Caruana took home the Tata Steel Group B title. Caruana won the Italian Chess Championship twice more, in 2010 and 2011, his fourth and last time doing so. He had missed the 2009 Italian Chess Championships to compete in the FIDE World Cup. Caruana shot up the world rankings by the end of 2011, peaking at number 17 in the live rankings with a rating well above 2700.
Caruana’s improvement continued in 2012. Caruana continued on a winning streak, taking first place in the Reykjavik Open, Sigeman and Co. Chess Tournament, and Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting following a tie for second place in the Tata Steel Tournament’s A section. Caruana also placed second in the Tal Memorial and the Grand Slam Chess Final that year. Caruana had a rating of 2781 as of January 2013, placing her fifth in the international rankings.
Fabiano Caruana spent a lot of time in 2013 to qualify for 2014 candidate tournament and in 2014, he finished he finished both Norway chess and Shamkir chess behind Carlsen in each event. He also won silver medal in World Rapid Chess Championship in Dubai. He again represented Italy at 2014 Olympiad in Norway. After Olympia, he returned back to United States and won the Sinquefield cup with 7 game winning streaks.
He has performance rating of 30380 and beat the GM Nakamura, GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (twice), GM Levon Aronian and GM Topalov (twice) and most importantly world chess champion Magnus Carlsen.
Candidates Tournament 2016
Fabiano Caruana
returned to the FIDE Grand Prix in 2016, determined to make it to the Candidates event following a spectacular performance at the Sinquefield Cup. In the first leg in Baku, Azerbaijan, in October 2014, Caruana and GM Boris Gelfand tied for first place. Caruana tied for fourth in Tashkent to end the
year.
Caruana tied for first place in Khanty-Mansiysk, the final leg of the FIDE Grand Prix, in May2015 with GM Dmitry Jakovenko and Nakamura. With the victory, Caruana qualified automatically for the 2016 Candidates tournament by taking first place in the2014–2015 FIDE Grand Prix.
Caruana began 2016 with a second-place result, one point behind Carlsen, at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. At the start of the Candidates event, the 23-year-old was
ranked third in the world among players.
The world’s top players, including GM Viswanathan Anand, GM Sergey Karjakin, GM Peter Svidler, Nakamura, Topalov, GM Anish Giri, and Aronian, competed in the 2016 Candidates tournament in Moscow in addition to Caruana.
World Chess Championship 2018 Preparation
2016 proved to be a fantastic year for Caruana even though they didn’t win the Candidates tournament. After capturing his first-ever U.S. Chess Championship, he went back to Baku to assist the US in capturing its first gold medal at an Olympiad since 1976.Caruana placed third in the 2016 Grand Chess Tour after taking second at the London Chess Classic.
Caruana’s victory over GM Vladimir Kramnik in the opening round of the 2017 Isle of Man International almost guaranteed him a spot in the Candidates Tournament in 2018. At the end of the year, Caruana defeated GM Ian Nepomniachtchi in a blitz match to win the London Chess Classic.
Fabiano Caruana also participated in the 2018 Speed Chess Championship but was eliminated in the first round by Aronian. After many years of hard work, Caruana finally got the chance to play against Magnus Carlsen in the World Chess Championship and Carlsen claimed the tiebreak by winning each of the three rapid chess games.
